The concept of opening a non-profitable and charitable establishment was derived from a group of concerned individuals from Zanzibar, living in the islands and abroad, who have through the years conducted several independent charitable activities such as the building of schools, providing water supplies, supporting orphanages and providing food to poor communities in both Unguja and Pemba.
By centralizing these efforts into a single organization with a defined mandate, appropriate governing body and established rules and regulations, the group of individual believes that greater impact can be achieved in more organized and transparent manner. Such a structure would also attract further support from other individuals who share the same concern and are motivated and committed to improving the quality of lives in Zanzibar.
On February 20th, 2014 the Milele Zanzibar Foundation was officially registered in Zanzibar. Institutionalized as a Trust, the organization is administered by a board of trustees composed of Zanzibaris who currently reside abroad, mostly in the United Arab Emirates. Together with other individuals whose lives have been touched by these special islands, they form our fundraising body and ensure the sustainability of our programmatic interventions.
Despite the many achievements and advancements in Zanzibar over the past 50 years, many rural communities still struggle with lack of basic necessities such as clean and consistent water supply, quality and affordable health care services, quality education, safe fuel and energy sources and dependable income streams.
Through both past experience and a previously conducted needs-assessment, the members of the organization have agreed to focus on the following mandate: to promote the sustainable development and improved quality of life of rural communities in Zanzibar and Pemba through enhanced access to health, education and livelihood opportunities.
This mandate would be achieved by bringing together a group of individuals from the community who have the motivation and skills to carry out the duties and activities.
The organization also aims to achieve its mission through partnerships other non-governmental organizations that share similar mandates and have the determination and capacity to deliver.
